Headquarters, 82d Airborne Division, General Orders No. 64 (December 13, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Edwin L. Raub (ASN: 13055992), United States Army, for gallantry in action on 17 September 1944, near ****, Holland. Private Raub, rifleman, Headquarters Company, 2d Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82d Airborne Division, after dropping by parachute was fired on by a 20-mm. anti-aircraft battery located near the Drop Zone. Knowing that this gun was causing considerable damage to our low flying aircraft and the men already in chutes, Private Raub chose to slip his chute into the gun instead of away from it with the object in mind to land and knock it out as quickly as possible. Bullets perforated his canopy, but did not hinder his landing on the edge of the emplacement. With parachute harness still on his body he lunged into the emplacement and with his pistol killed one of the enemy, capturing the remaining crew and disabling the gun. This display of superior courage was in keeping with the traditions of the Airborne Forces.
