The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Roman T. Piernick (ASN: 0-383278), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82d Airborne Division, in action on 30 April 1945, near ****, Germany. First Lieutenant Piernick, Battalion S-2, came upon a large farm house from which he and two members of his section drew fire. Stepping into plain view, First Lieutenant Piernick called for the surrender of the occupants and fired his sub-machine gun into the upper part of the house. About forty men, including officers, were taken. By his aggressive action, First Lieutenant Piernick took an enemy strong point without loss of life and enabled the battalion to clear the river shore, and is in keeping with the highest traditions of the Airborne Forces of the United States Army.
