The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Major (Infantry) Charles Patterson (ASN: 0-1286175), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82d Airborne Division, in action on 4 January 1945, about 3/4 miles from Arbre Fontaine, Belgium. Major Patterson, Battalion S-3, voluntarily accompanied a three-man patrol deep into hostile territory to determine enemy strength and dispositions. Initial contact with about twenty of the enemy resulted in a fire fight from which he withdrew successfully. He continued until the main enemy body was encountered. Major Patterson then led his patrol around the perimeter until discovered and ordered to surrender, but he eluded the enemy and finally became engaged with two outpost groups. In the fight, one member of the patrol was killed, but Major Patterson skillfully and courageously refused to recognize the strength of the enemy and fought his way to friendly lines with vital information which resulted in an immediate attack, the killing of approximately 150 and the capture of 200 of the enemy. The outstanding heroism, leadership and devotion to duty displayed by Major Patterson reflect the highest traditions of the Airborne Forces of the United States Army.
