The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Anthony J. Pappas (ASN: 0-4387155), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company A, 1st Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82d Airborne Division, in action south of ****, Sicily, on 9 July 1943. Lieutenant Pappas jumped with his serial at night and was immediately engaged by the enemy. In the course of the subsequent action, Lieutenant Pappas was wounded, but refused to be evacuated and led his men in repeated assaults against the enemy in the face of severe rifle and artillery fire, inspiring them to resist until contact was effected with friendly forces. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
