Headquarters, 82d Airborne Division, General Orders No. 3 (January 6, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technician Fifth Grade Hubert G. Pack (ASN: 7085504), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company F, 2d Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82d Airborne Division, in action on 9 June 1944 near ****, France. When his platoon leader and elements of his platoon were trapped by a superior force of enemy, Private Pack, a radio operator, voluntarily made his way through machine gun fire and found a covered escape route. He led his leader and some men out of the trap, and found that four were missing. Private Pack again made the hazardous trip through the enemy lines and brought out two of the men. He then went back to locate the remaining two men and crawled to within ten feet of an enemy mortar position where he saw that both were dead. This gallant and courageous action on the part of Private Pack was a source of inspiration to his comrades and was in keeping with the glorious traditions of the Airborne Forces of the United States Army.
