Headquarters, 82d Airborne Division, General Orders No. 105 (July 5, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Technician Fourth Grade Thomas M. Johnson (ASN: 33092984), United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy while serving with the 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82d Airborne Division, on 31 March 1945, at ****, France. When a gasoline burner blew up and sprayed the kitchen tent with flaming gasoline, one cook was enveloped in flames. Technician Fifth Grade Johnson rushed into the burning tent without thought of his own personal safety and carried out the burning man, then smothered and extinguished the flames by using his own body. This heroic act saved the endangered man from serious injury and reflects great credit on Technician Fifth Grade Johnson.
