The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to Lieutenant Commander Donald Bradford Beary (NSN: 0-7569), United States Navy, for distinguished service in the line of his profession as Commanding Officer of the U.S.S. REMLIK and the U.S.S. LAMSON, engaged in the important, exacting, and hazardous duty of patrolling the waters infested by enemy submarines and mines, protecting vitally important convoys of troops and supplies through these waters, and in offensive and defensive action, vigorously and unremittingly prosecuted against all forms of enemy naval activity during World War I.

    The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Legion of Merit with Combat “V” to Rear Admiral Donald Bradford Beary (NSN: 0-7569), United States Navy, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States as Commander of the Logistic Support Group of the FIFTH Fleet from January to May 1945. During this period forces under his command furnished logistic service at sea to units of the FIFTH Fleet engaged in amphibious operations at Iwo Jima and in the Okinawa Gunto and in supporting fast carrier operations, including raids on Tokyo and Kyushu. Due to his outstanding efficiency and ability to maintain a flexible organization, the logistic requirements of the fleet were supplied expeditiously at the time and places desired by the tactical commanders. His initiative and steadfast devotion to duty contributed materially to the successful support of the fleet during long periods of continuous operations at sea. His conduct throughout was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. (Rear Admiral Beary is authorized to wear the Combat “V”.)

    The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Distinguished Service Medal to Rear Admiral Donald Bradford Beary (NSN: 0-7569), United States Navy, for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished service in a position of great responsibility to the Government of the United States as Commander, Fleet Operational Training Command, United States Atlantic Fleet, in the period from March 1943 to November 1944. Rear Admiral Beary organized and developed the Fleet Operational Training Command, United States Atlantic Fleet. Formulating comprehensive plans to meet the tremendous task of the initial training and of keeping Fleet units abreast of constant new developments, he carried out those plans with utmost vigor, skill and sound judgment. Rear Admiral Beary’s thorough understanding of the problems involved in a training program of unparalleled scope was accompanied by the ability to plan for and accomplish their efficient and speedy solution. His intelligent, forceful leadership is reflected in the high state of battle proficiency and readiness for action displayed in all theaters of naval warfare by the ships trained by his command. Rear Admiral Beary’s exceptionally meritorious services have contributed materially to the successful conduct of the war, and his achievements reflect great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.

    The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting a Gold Star in lieu of a Second Award of the Legion of Merit with Combat “V” to Rear Admiral Donald Bradford Beary (NSN: 0-7569), United States Navy, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States as Commander of the Logistic Support Group for the THIRD Fleet from 28 May to 19 September 1945. During this period of sustained strikes against Japan and an extended period at sea, his group furnished ammunition, fuel and supplies to fast carrier task groups operating off the Coast of Japan and by skillful planning and precise evaluation of the needs of the Fleet the necessary logistic support was supplied promptly and in sufficient quantities to meet the operational schedule of the assaults upon the enemy. When the mission of the THIRD Fleet changed to that of preparation for the initial landings and the occupation of Japan, he quickly revised the plans and schedules to meet the new situation. His outstanding knowledge and keen appreciation of the many problems involved enabled him to contribute materially to the final phase of the war against Japan. His initiative, professional skill and determination to supply a maximum of logistic support in a minimum of time, under difficult and trying conditions, was of inestimable value to Commander THIRED Fleet and was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
