The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technical Sergeant John W. Mullaney (ASN: 6912001), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company C, 1st Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82d Airborne Division, in action on 5 January 1945, about four miles from ****, Belgium. Technical Sergeant Mullaney, platoon leader, was advancing with his platoon through a road cut when they were subjected to surprise automatic fire from their flank. Technical Sergeant Mullaney, with complete disregard for his own personal safety, rushed over the top of the road cut, firing his sub-machine gun and silenced the enemy position. During this action he knocked out one machine gun, killed four Germans and captured twelve. Technical Sergeant Mullaney’s actions were an inspiration to all who witnessed them and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the Airborne Forces.
