The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Gilbert N. Moser (ASN: 33161309), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company B, 628th Tank Destroyer Battalion, 82d Airborne Division, in action on 24 – 25 December 1944, near ****, Belgium. During a night attack by enemy infantry and tanks at ****, Belgium, Sergeant Moser dismounted from his destroyer and despite heavy enemy machine gun and high explosive anti-tank fire, attempted in the darkness to locate the enemy tanks which he could hear approaching his position. Noticing a part of a tank turret visible by the corner of a building about 35 yards away, Sergeant Moser remained on foot and directed the fire of his destroyer until it destroyed the enemy tank with two rounds. Then, in the light of the burning tank, Sergeant Moser saw that another enemy tank was attempting to pass his position. Despite the continuous machine gun fire and his exposed position, he continued to direct the fire of his own gun upon the second tank. The fight ended when simultaneous shots from his destroyer and the enemy tank knocked both vehicles out of the action. When his destroyer burst into flames, Sergeant Moser, although still under enemy machine gun and small arms fire, assisted three wounded members of his destroyer crew from the burning vehicle to the safety of another destroyer. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
