Headquarters, 82d Airborne Division, General Orders No. 64 (December 13, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Edward G. Miller (ASN: 12086061), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company I, 3d Battalion, 507th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82d Airborne Division, in action on 15 July 1944, near ****, France. All attempts to contact the 60th Infantry having failed, a volunteer patrol, of which Private First Class Miller was a member, was sent out to locate and establish contact with that unit. The patrol passed through an area into which the enemy had infiltrated during the night and was trapped and fired upon by the enemy. Private First Class Miller, through courage and skill, made his way to the top of a small knoll. Upon sighting him, the enemy opened fire in his direction. Despite the enemy fire, Private First Class Miller continued to empty one magazine after another into the enemy’s positions and distracted fire from the remainder of the patrol. His courageous action enabled the patrol to continue and establish contact with the 60th Infantry. Private First Class Miller’s actions reflect great credit on himself and the United States Army.
