The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technician Fifth Grade Stanley Raymond Mikuta (ASN: 33438430), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 11th Airborne Division, in action against the enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 6 February 1945. While a member of a patrol that was ambushed by a numerically superior enemy force, Technician Fifth Grade Mikuta volunteered to dispose of a hostile machine gun nest. Under intense enemy fire, this intrepid soldier crawled through the enemy lines and silenced the gun by throwing a grenade, thus insuring the safety of his companions. During this he was wounded in both legs to the extent that he could not walk. In the meantime Technician Fifth Grade Mikuta had become separated from his patrol. He then dragged himself through the enemy lines to the safety of a foxhole, where he remained for seven days with enemy patrols passing him daily. On the eighth day, he was rescued by a friendly patrol. The great courage and fortitude displayed by Technician Fifth Grade Mikuta are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
