Headquarters, 82d Airborne Division, General Orders No. 96 (June 25, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Staff Sergeant Elvin G. Collins, Jr. (ASN: 17074931), United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy while serving with the 325th Glider Infantry Regiment, 82d Airborne Division, on 10 May 1945, at ****, Germany. When an ammunition and vehicle dump in the company area caught fire, Staff Sergeant Collins took a squad of men into the burning dump to fight the fire. Despite the danger to himself from exploding ammunition, anti-tank mines and burning gasoline, Staff Sergeant Collins worked in the dump area until the fire was brought under control. By his leadership and initiative in the face of danger, Staff Sergeant Collins was an example to his men and contributed materially to the saving of many valuable vehicles.
