Headquarters, Americal Division, General Orders No. 44 (April 18, 1945)
The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Colonel (Ordnance) Carl Davis McFerren (ASN: 0-21925), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving as Deputy Chief of Staff of the 23d Infantry Division (Americal), in action against the enemy at Cebu, Philippine Islands, on 12 and 13 April 1945. In the attack on Hill #21, Lieutenant Colonel McFerren went forward with the advance elements to determine enemy strength and capabilities. Mortar and sniper fire were heavy and there were many casualties. Without regard for his safety, Lieutenant Colonel McFerren exposed himself to obtain information which contributed largely to the success of the operation. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Lieutenant Colonel McFerren, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
