Headquarters, 82d Airborne Division, General Orders No. 97 (June 28, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant James E. McDonald (ASN: 14012453), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company I, 3d Battalion, 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82d Airborne Division, in action on 7 April 1945, at ****, Germany. When a force of fifteen enemy infantry attempted to infiltrate his position, Staff Sergeant McDonald exposed himself to heavy, point-blank enemy fire so that he could point out targets to his squad. Through his skillful direction, his men inflicted heavy casualties on the enemy and forced them to withdraw. Later, accompanied by one other man, he stormed two buildings, forcing the German enemy to flee into the streets where they were cut down by his men. Staff Sergeant McDonald’s fearless and aggressive leadership contributed greatly to his company’s overall success in a critical situation. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
