The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Airman’s Medal to Senior Master Sergeant George R. Fischbach, United States Air Force, for heroism involving voluntary risk of life at Pease Air Force Base, New Hampshire, on 5 May 1972. On that date, Sergeant Fischbach remained at an aircraft which was engulfed in flames. With complete disregard for his own safety, Sergeant Fischbach, despite the hazard of burning fuel and the possibility of an external tank exploding, directed and assisted in the timely extinguishing of the fire, persevering in his efforts and succeeding in saving a valuable aircraft. The exemplary courage and heroism displayed by Sergeant Fischbach reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
