The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry), [then First Lieutenant] Edson R. Mattice (ASN: 0-35822), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company C, 1st Battalion, 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82d Airborne Division, in action on 19 November 1943, at ****, Italy. While in a defensive position of Hill 1017, Captain Mattice’s company was subjected to an intense barrage from heavy mortars. The company command post received six direct hits, killing four and critically wounding three others. Captain Mattice left the protecting cover of his foxhole and ran to their assistance. In an open position and at the height of the barrage, he rendered first aid and moved them to safety. In so doing, he was partially stunned by concussion from a bursting shell and the shrapnel from another pierced his clothing in several places. Captain Mattice’s coolness under fire and gallantry were responsible for saving the lives of the three soldiers. Such conduct reflects great credit upon himself and the Airborne Forces.
