The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private Howard Matt (ASN: 35338955), United States Army, for gallantry in action on 20 September 1944 near ****, Holland. Private Matt, BAR Gunner, Company B, 1st Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82d Airborne Division, gave a heroic and exemplary performance when of his own volition, he alone remained in position and covered the withdrawal of his platoon from an outpost when it was aggressively attacked by about one battalion of German parachute troops. Private Matt stayed in his position and engaged the enemy with close range fire. As a result of his action, the platoon was enabled to counter-attack and reestablish their former defensive position where they found his BAR still in position with every round fired, but no trace of Private Matt. The perseverance and actions of Private Matt cast a favorable reflection on the highest traditions of the Airborne Forces of the United States Army.
