Headquarters, Americal Division, General Orders No. 44 (April 18, 1945)
The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Colonel (Infantry) William James Mahoney (ASN: 0-18616), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving as Commanding Officer of the 164th Infantry Regiment, 23d Infantry Division (Americal), in action against the enemy at Cebu, Philippine Islands, from 11 April 1945 to 17 April 1945. Colonel Mahoney led his troops in a difficult envelopment movement around the enemy’s rear. The terrain was rugged and small arms fire was heavy from enemy in deeply entrenched positions. Making personal reconnaissance from exposed observation posts his presence under heavy fire was an inspiration to his regiment and contributed immeasurably to the success of the rapid advance which hastened the collapse of the enemy lines. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Colonel Mahoney, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
