The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Leo F. Lopez (ASN: 39236505), United States Army, for gallantry in action from 18 to 23 September 1944, near ****, Holland. Private Lopez, Rifleman, Company I, 3d Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82d Airborne Division, demonstrated unusual coolness and courage under fire when he deliberately exposed himself to draw enemy fire in order to disclose the locations of enemy weapons. Private Lopez was a member of a scouting party that was preceding the advance of the company, whose mission was to secure landing zones for the gliders. When the enemy was encountered, the scouting party fell back according to plan, toward the company. On his own volition, Private Lopez stood in plain enemy view, drew the enemy fire and disclosed the location of enemy positions. His platoon leader, through Private Lopez’ act, brought destructive fire on the enemy, inflicting on them casualties and caused them to withdraw in disorder. Private Lopez’ outstanding initiative and great personal courage reflected the highest traditions of the Airborne Forces of the United States Army.
