The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Adam J. Leschinski (ASN: 6907591), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 509th Parachute Infantry Battalion (Separate), attached to the 82d Airborne Division, in action on 24 December 1944, about one mile from their****, Belgium. Private Leschinski, light machine gunner, displayed great heroism when his sorely under-strength company came under heavy enemy small arms and automatic weapons fire. The company then broke up into small groups. Private Leschinski was in one of these units, under fire from a machine gun to the front. He fearlessly picked up his own machine gun and tripod, advanced directly toward the enemy position, firing his weapon from the hip. His action wiped out the enemy gun position and caused other enemy riflemen on the flanks to leave their positions. Continuing his effective fire, Private Leschinski turned to the fleeing foe, killing two and wounding three. He continued to advance, firing on the enemy until further pursuit was impractical. His coolness in the face of great danger played a vital part in the success of the attack. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
