The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant George H. Leidenheimer (ASN: 14099794), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company B, 1st Battalion, 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82d Airborne Division, in action on 8 July 1944, near ****, France. Staff Sergeant Leidenheimer, upon receiving orders to move southward, led his company, plus units of the 2d Battalion, through an area occupied by enemy troops to assigned area. After the company had dug in, Staff Sergeant Leidenheimer personally led some of the newly arrived, inexperienced troops of another unit into the attack. His actions and leadership inspired these men to advance against the enemy, and thus prevented them from being held in check by veteran German forces. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
