The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Harvill W. Lazenby (ASN: 14092280), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company B, 1st Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82d Airborne Division, in action on **** 1943, about one-quarter mile from *****, Sicily. Sergeant Lazenby, Squad Leader, with twenty men had been surrounded by Germans. In order that the men with him could be safely led to friendly occupied terrain, Sergeant Lazenby volunteered to discover the exact positions of friendly and enemy troops, He performed this task with entire disregard for his personal safety in the face of heavy enemy machine gun and rifle fire. In determining the enemy’s location he threw rocks into their positions causing them to reveal their locations by bringing fire on himself. Through the fearless efforts of Sergeant Lazenby and one other enlisted man who accompanied him, the twenty men were safely guided to friendly troops. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
