The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Colonel (Infantry) Ernest Hertel Laflamme, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving as Commanding Officer of the 1st Battalion, 511th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 11th Airborne Division, in action against the enemy near Manila, Luzon, Philippine Islands, in 1944. When forward elements of his unit were pinned down by fire from a Japanese 5-inch naval gun and supporting heavy machine gun blocking the southern approaches to Manila in early February, the Lieutenant Colonel Laflamme proceeded to reconnoiter the terrain for a safe route of approach for his paratroopers. Returning after being subjected to heavy fire periodically by Japanese machine guns and artillery, he led his troops in a continuation of the attack. Lieutenant Colonel LaflammeÕs gallant actions were credited with the successful, swift advance against stubborn enemy resistance. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Lieutenant Colonel Laflamme, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
