The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Harold E. Knode (ASN: 35288815), United States Army, for gallantry in action on ****, 1943, about five miles from ****, Italy. Corporal Knode, Mortar Squad Leader, Company E, 2d Battalion, 325th Glider Infantry Regiment, 82d Airborne Division, efficiently and effectively directed mortar fire within hearing and under fire at the enemy, thereby saving the left flank of the position by knocking out an enemy mortar and two machine guns. He returned several times under fire from his position in the front lines to make sure the correct ranges were being passed by telephone to the Platoon Command Post. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
