The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class James J. Kilcullen (ASN: 36737264), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters Company, 3d Battalion, 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82d Airborne Division, in action on 20 September 1944, near ****, Holland. Private First Class Kilcullen, a Communication Wireman, crossed the Waal River with the assault company which was pinned down by fire from enemy machine guns and mortars. Private First Class Kilcullen, with complete disregard for his own personal safety, jumped from his protected position to assault an enemy machine gun nest. Running and crawling he attacked the enemy position with a pistol and Gammon Grenades, putting the gun out of action. Private First Class Kilcullen’s actions resulted in an acceleration of the attack and his courageous conduct reflects great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
