Headquarters, 82d Airborne Division, General Orders No. 61 (November 30, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Edward A. Keyser (ASN: 37486371), United States Army, for gallantry in action on 1 and 2 October 1944, about one mile from ****, Holland. Private Keyser, Company H, 3d Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82d Airborne Division, was in charge of a listening post well in advance of his platoon when the enemy launched an assault against the positions with armored elements in support. A half-track troop carrier loaded with parachutists approached Private Keyser’s post. He opened fire immediately with his BAR, killed some occupants and forced the rest to abandon the vehicle and flee. He then coolly directed mortar fire which destroyed the half-track. He had been instructed to withdraw if attacked but chose to defend his post. His high courage and skillful performance of duty served to inflict casualties on the enemy and were in keeping with the high standards of the Airborne Forces.
