The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant James E. Jones (ASN: 14062720), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82d Airborne Division, in action on 30 April 1945, near ****, Germany. Sergeant Jones was leading his squad as right flank security when a 20-mm. gun suddenly opened fire from 300 yards, pinning down his squad and the right platoon of his company. Ignoring the heavy fire directed at him, Sergeant Jones continued to advance on the enemy position until he reached a vantage point. From this position, he killed three of the gun crew with his Thompson Sub-Machine Gun and the remaining two surrendered allowing his company to resume its forward movement. Sergeant Jones’ initiative and courage were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Army.
