The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Frederick R. Jones (ASN: 0-452273), United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force while serving with the 325th Glider Infantry Regiment, 82d Airborne Division, in action against the enemy on 3 January 1945 ****, Belgium. Captain Jones, Company Commander, when an enemy strongpoint held up the company on his right and slowed the battalion advance, personally organized a rifle platoon for an assault on the enemy position. The strongpoint could only be approached by crossing open fields. Recklessly exposing himself to heavy enemy fire, Captain Jones was the first to jump to his feet and rush forward. Under his inspiring leadership, the platoon followed him, maintaining a furious assault fire. Captain Jones’ leadership resulted in the neutralization of the strongpoint and allowed his battalion to continue its advance. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
