The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Field Artillery) Carroll B. Ishee (ASN: 0-1169583), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Battery B, 320th Glider Field Artillery Battalion, 82d Airborne Division, in action on 18 September 1944, near ****, Germany. First Lieutenant Ishee, Reconnaissance Officer, landed with a glider group that missed the designated landing zone by three miles. These gliders were subjected tofire from enemy flak guns and severe small arms fire which was so intense that men were forced to remain in ditches and canals until after darkness. First Lieutenant Ishee organized men to unload gliders and posted a perimeter defense to protect the unloading. After darkness while in charge of the rear guard of the column and when attacked near ****, Germany, he and his rear guard became separated from the main body. He searched the area for wounded and for stragglers during the night and led his small group to the vicinity of ****, Holland. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
