The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) James D. Irwin (ASN: 0-1304372), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company G, 3d Battalion, 507th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82d Airborne Division, in action on 9 June 1944 near ****, France. When one battalion of infantry was ordered to cross a causeway defended by a reinforced German regiment supported by artillery, Second Lieutenant Irwin displayed courage and leadership of inspiring quality. The advance was slow and casualties heavy. But despite the fire and throughout the entire crossing, Second Lieutenant Irwin ran up and down the line exhorting, urging, cheering and joking with the advancing infantry to speed up the momentum of the attack. His exemplary courage and leadership contributed materially to the final success of the assault and were in keeping with the brave traditions of the Airborne Forces of the United States Army.
