The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private Kenneth V. Hungerford (ASN: 39087728), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company F, 2d Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82d Airborne Division, in action on 20 September 1944, at ****, Holland. Private Hungerford, Acting Squad Leader, demonstrated dominant leadership ability during an attack by his battalion on the Waal River Bridge under automatic weapons fire from concealed enemy fortifications. In order to accurately direct his squad, Private Hungerford deliberately exposed himself to draw fire and thus located the enemy positions. He aggressively led his men forward under intense artillery, automatic weapons and small arms fire and was the first American soldier to reach the **** Bridge. Private Hungerford received wounds which later resulted in his death. His efforts were an immeasurable contribution to the success of the attack and his men were inspired to successfully defend their position. Private Hungerford’s gallant actions reflects great credit upon himself and the highest traditions of the Airborne Forces of the United States Army.
