The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Austin F. Humbrock (ASN: 36614458), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company F, 2d Battalion, 401st Glider Infantry Regiment, 82d Airborne Division, in action on 9 June 1944 in ****, France. When his company was under severe attack and ammunition was almost exhausted, Private First Class Humbrock voluntarily dashed through enemy fire a distance of 300 yards and brought back several boxes of ammunition. Later, when the company was ordered to counter-attack and was making slow headway against the intense enemy fire, Private First Class Humbrock sprang from cover and charged the enemy yelling, “Let’s go!” He was killed in this gallant act, but his heroic conduct so inspired his comrades that they followed his example. Private First Class Humbrock exemplified those qualities of courage, initiative, and determination which are traditional with the Airborne Forces of the United States Army.
