The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private John L. Hinston (ASN: 14129962), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82d Airborne Division, in action on 9 July 1943, eight miles southeast of ****, Sicily. Private Hinston was acting as a point for a patrol which included the Combat Team Commanding Officer and his staff, operating many miles behind enemy lines. Private Hinston was ambushed and fired upon by superior forces, but immediately engaged them at point blank range, killing and wounding several. With utter disregard for his own safety, Private Hinston voluntarily exposed himself to draw enemy fire and thus warn the patrol of the enemy’s location and disposition. In this gallant action Private Hinston acquitted himself to reflect credit on himself and his country. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
