Headquarters, 82d Airborne Division, General Orders No. 36 (October 15, 1943)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Edward B. Hill, Jr. (ASN: 14097404), United States Army, for gallantry in action on 17 September 1943, about one-third mile from Altavilla, Italy. Private Hill, a rifleman with Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82d Airborne Division, voluntarily covered the flank of his patrol of five men when it encountered an enemy position of an estimated hundred men. Private Hill, in a position of little cover, remained in position under heavy automatic fire and protected the patrol in its withdrawal. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
