Headquarters, 82d Airborne Division, General Orders No. 29 (August 20, 1943)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Charles T. Hill (ASN: 34018771), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 456th Parachute Field Artillery Battalion, 82d Airborne Division, in action on 9 July 1943, about three miles south of ****, Sicily. A soldier having been seriously wounded and given immediate first aid, required further medical attention in order to save his life. Corporal Hill, together with another soldier, carried this man on an improvised stretcher through a constant heavy rifle and machine gun fire, fighting and carrying the wounded man for about two hours, over a distance of about a mile and one-half to an aid station. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
