The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Field Artillery) Raymond A. Grossman (ASN: 0-465095), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Battery C, 456th Parachute Field Artillery Battalion, 82d Airborne Division, in action on 10 July 1943. Lieutenant Grossman, while acting as Assistant Battery Executive Officer, and while under heavy counter-battery fire and having been forced to abandon his position because of direct hits by *** *** guns, led his crew back to the original position and resumed firing into enemy positions on *****, 5 miles northwest of ****, Sicily. This officer’s personal leadership and courage were an inspiration to all members of his gun crew. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
