The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private Arthur L. Gregory (ASN: 36347119), United States Army, for gallantry in action on 20 September 1944, at ****, Holland. Private Gregory, Rifleman, Company F, 2d Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82d Airborne Division, gave an exemplary performance during the battle of ****, Holland, when he rushed into a bullet-swept street in full view of the enemy in an attempt to rescue his platoon leader who was wounded. With total disregard for personal safety, he attempted to carry him to safety, only to be wounded himself by sniper fire. Due to his injury and loss of blood he was unable to continue and later died of wounds received in this action. As a result of his exemplary performance the men of his company were inspired to high feats of action, enabling the seizure of the Waal River bridges. Private Gregory’s gallant action and evaluation of his platoon leader’s life above that of his own upheld the highest traditions of the parachute forces of the United States Army.
