The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant Jewel H. Goodman (ASN: 34152557), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters Company, 2d Battalion, 325th Glider Infantry Regiment, 82d Airborne Division, in action on 3 January 1945, near ****, Belgium. With no thought for his personal safety, Sergeant Goodman led his squad across fifty yards of shell-swept ground to set up a base of flanking fire. When the first and second gunners were wounded by artillery he immediately took over operation of the machine gun and laid down such a terrific concentration of fire that the enemy’s attention was diverted from the attacking elements of the company. The gun was knocked out by an artillery shell which killed the ammunition bearer and demolished the weapon. Sergeant Goodman left the useless gun and attached himself to another machine gun crew as an ammunition bearer until he was killed in the performance of those duties. The gallantry and devotion to duty displayed by Sergeant Goodman were in keeping with the highest traditions of the Airborne Forces.
