The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Bonnie C. Garza (ASN: 18012251), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company B, 1st Battalion, 325th Glider Infantry Regiment, 82d Airborne Division, in action on 5 July 1944, near ****, France. With complete disregard for his own safety, Private Garza covered the advance of his unit across an open field to assault enemy forces dug in a strongpoint supported by at least five or six automatic weapons. Advancing under artillery and mortar fire in an exposed position, Private Garza fired his machine gun from the hip, single-handedly knocking out one machine gun nest and assisting materially in causing the surrender of two others. Neutralization of the enemy strongpoint allowed Private Garza’s unit to complete its original mission. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
