The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Harry Garlick (ASN: 190663356), United States Army, for gallantry in action on 20 October 1944, near ****, Holland. Private Garlick, rifleman, Company D, 2d Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82d Airborne Division, took command of a squad when its leader was wounded and led it with high courage and commendable initiative during an important patrol mission. He was participating in a combat patrol of platoon strength to secure information concerning enemy dispositions and capture prisoners. About one hundred yards from the first objective, within the enemy lines, the patrol was subjected to concentrated fire from 5-cm. and 81-mm. mortars and hand grenading from all sides under the light of illumination flares which made control difficult. The leader of the squad was wounded. Private Garlick took charge of the men, led the men to the objective, encountered heavy opposition and was ordered back. He brought his squad out intact. Inside friendly lines, it was discovered that three men were missing from the squad. Private Garlick voluntarily returned to the objective, located the men and brought them out to safety. His initiative, leadership and courage under adverse circumstances and in the face of bitter opposition was directly responsible for the successful disengagement of his own patrol and the rescue of three men. His exemplary conduct and skill in this action was in keeping with the high traditions of the Airborne Forces of the United States Army.
