The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Master Sergeant Henry S. Furst (ASN: 13048622), United States Army, for gallantry in action on 17 September 1943, about one-half mile from Altavilla, Italy. Master Sergeant Furst, Headquarters Company, 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82d Airborne Division, when his unit was surrounded and enemy troops were filtering through the lines, was instrumental in effectively organizing the positions of his unit and checking further hostile advance. Master Sergeant Furst directed activities without regard for personal safety under heavy machine gun, rifle and artillery fire. His action was an inspiration to his men to successfully repulse all attacks. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
