The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Phillip J. Foley (ASN: 11050693), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company G, 3d Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82d Airborne Division, in action on 10 July 1943, five miles west of ****, Sicily. Private Foley, acting as second in command of a rifle squad, assumed command of it when his squad leader was killed and moved it toward enemy positions. Under heavy rifle, machine gun, and artillery fire he directed effective fire on the enemy position. Although wounded by shrapnel, Private Foley continued to direct the fire of his squad effectively on the enemy. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
