The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Kenneth Ferrell (ASN: 19113903), United States Army, for gallantry in action against the enemy on 1 and 2 October 1944, near ****, Holland. A platoon of German parachutists launched a strong assault against an important road block in the middle of the battalion sector. Corporal Ferrell, Assistant Squad Leader, Company H, 3d Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82d Airborne Division, maneuvered his men into position to meet the attack. As he directed the fire fight, he was wounded by an enemy hand grenade and lost the sight of one eye. Despite this great handicap he personally filled the gap in the line where his BAR team had been knocked out. After all his ammunition was gone, he refused to leave his squad until the line was once again intact and did so only on a direct order. He personally knocked out one enemy machine gun and was indirectly responsible for the death of many of the attackers. Corporal Ferrell’s exhibition of great courage inspired his men at a critical time, and was in keeping with the highest tradition of the military service of the United States Army.
