The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Staff Sergeant Paul J. Ebert (ASN: 35291001), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company B, 1st Battalion, 325th Glider Infantry Regiment, 82d Airborne Division, in action on 15 June 1944, near ****, France. After Staff Sergeant Ebert’s platoon leader and platoon sergeant became casualties, Staff Sergeant Ebert took command of his platoon during a fierce enemy counterattack in which the enemy was able to drive a wedge into Staff Sergeant Ebert’s line. Staff Sergeant Ebert rallied his platoon and drove the enemy out of the gap, again making contact with the remainder of his unit. The enemy brought up tanks in an attempt to penetrate the line again. Staff Sergeant Ebert rallied his platoon and attacked the tanks with rifle grenades and bazookas, and after one tank was destroyed, the rest of the enemy tanks retreated. Staff Sergeant Ebert led his unit in an attack in pursuit of the enemy. This action allowed the rest of Staff Sergeant Ebert’s unit to continue the attack and reach its objective. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
