The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) James E. Dunn (ASN: 0-463917), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company C, 1st Battalion, 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82d Airborne Division, in action on *********, 1943, about one half miles from Altavilla, Italy. Lieutenant Dunn, serving as Platoon Leader, by his own courageous conduct and his direction of the fire of his platoon from an exposed position, successfully repelled two determined enemy attacks, thus making it possible for friendly troops to retain possession of Hill ***. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
