The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant James B. Dunn, Jr. (ASN: 15058258), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company E, 2d Battalion, 401st Glider Infantry Regiment, 82d Airborne Division, in action on 3 January 1945, about two miles from ****, Belgium. Staff Sergeant Dunn, Squad Leader, when his platoon was pinned down by intense machine gun fire, led his squad round the flank. Staff Sergeant Dunn knocked out an enemy machine gun. He then directed the fire of his squad on two other enemy machine guns. Exposing himself to heavy fire, Staff Sergeant Dunn moved forward, firing his submachine gun and tossing grenades. He knocked out both machine guns, killing eight enemy infantrymen and captured twelve. Staff Sergeant Dunn’s leadership and fighting ability enabled his platoon to continue its advance. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
