The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Donald A. Doyle (ASN: 31118090), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company F, 2d Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82d Airborne Division, in action on 9 January 1945 at ****, Belgium. When members of a patrol were pinned down by heavy mortar and machine gun fire, one man was killed and three others seriously wounded, and Private First Class Doyle volunteered to go the aid of these men. To reach them it was necessary to expose himself while crossing an open field, and Private First Class Doyle was wounded in the left shoulder by an enemy sniper. But disregarding his own injury he continued to the aid of the injured men and moved them to a safe area from which they could be evacuated to the rear. Private First Class Doyle’s gallant conduct was in keeping with the highest traditions of the Airborne Forces.
