His outstanding dedication to duty during combat operations in Iraq contributed to the overwhelming success of the Command’s mission. His actions are in keeping with the finest traditions of military service and reflect distinct credit upon himself, this Command, and the United States Army.

Sergeant First Class Handy’s personal courage and commitment to mission accomplishment in a combat zone under the most extreme circumstances, greatly contributed to the success of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM. Sergeant First Class Handy’s performance reflects great credit upon himself, Task Force BRONCO, Combine Joint Task Force-I and the United States Central Command.

    The Secretary of the Army of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Army Commendation Medal with Combat “V” to Sergeant Bruce Handy, United States Army, for uncommon valor during a combat patrol to Jaji, Iraq, on 30 April 2005. Sergeant Handy’s vehicle was attacked by a vehicle borne improvised explosive device resulting in two serious injuries. With total disregard for his own safety and with his platoon leader wounded, Sergeant Handy directed his driver and gunner to extinguish the fire and provide security while he ran past unexploded ordnance that was on fire to seek help from others in the patrol. Sergeant Handy’s dedication to duty and selfless service reflects great credit upon himself, the 1st Brigade Combat Team, Task Force LIBERTY, and the United States Army.
