The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Andrew J. Dixon (ASN: 36736110), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 11th Airborne Division, in action on Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 21 April 1945. During an attack against the enemy, Private Dixon volunteered as a member of a four-man patrol assigned the mission of crossing an enemy-held draw to seal off the enemy escape route. While crossing the draw, the patrol was subjected to intense hostile fire, and one of the patrol members was wounded. With utter disregard for his personal safety, Private Dixon moved forward to the aid of his wounded comrade and succeeded in forcing a crossing of the draw and destroyed the remaining enemy elements trying desperately to break out of the pocket. Private Dixon’s great courage and high sense of loyalty reflect great credit on himself and exemplify the finest traditions of the military service.
