The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Dominic J. Dippolito (ASN: 32205892), United States Army, for gallantry in action on 20 October 1944, near ****, Holland. Private First Class Dippolito, Sub-Machine Gunner, Company D, 2d Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82d Airborne Division, was a part of a combat patrol ordered to capture or kill all the enemy possible and reach two objectives to determine enemy strength and disposition. When the patrol was almost 100 yards from the first objective it ran into very heavy resistance. The enemy fired 5-cm. and 81-mm mortars and machine guns and hand grenaded the patrol heavily under illuminating flares fired at the rate of one per minute. In this action the squad leader was wounded. Private First Class Dippolito was on the point and lost contact with the other men. Although alone and on bare terrain with no cover or concealment, he advanced to the first objective and found that it was a Germany Company Command Post. Although a platoon of Germans was hand grenading the patrol, and another enemy platoon was dug in along a ditch between the first objective and the second, Private First Class Dippolito went into the enemy Command Post, killed three and wounded four more with his Thompson Sub-Machine Gun. Because of his initiative, aggressiveness, and utter disregard for his own safety, the patrol obtained much valuable information. Private First Class Dippolito’s conduct was in keeping with the high traditions of the Airborne Forces of the United States Army.
